Sushi Making in Britian
Has sushi become the nation’s favourite alternative to fish and chips? Looking at the evidence it seems as if it may be so! Once it was considered a ‘weird looking’, foreign delicacy that to top it off isn’t cooked! However, British people have now embraced the Japanese dish, and is soon becoming the nations favourite.
The first sushi restaurant ‘Moshi Moshi’ opened its door in 1994 and was a favourite lunch choice for city-slickers who didn’t want to be seen as ‘pigging out’ but rather refuelling from a high tech conveyor-belt eating compact, healthy, stylish and glossy food. At the time, many people thought the idea was unlikely to succeed in London. Today, however, kaiten sushi cuisine is a hugely popular concept, and there are many such restaurants across London and the UK. London alone now has more than 300 Japanese restaurants and the British market for Japanese food is worth more than £500 million a year. Some of Europe's chefs are flocking to Tokyo, with the Sushi Academy there seeing an increasing number of enrolments.
By 2001, Yo! Sushi was the market leader. The Anglo-Japanese brand appeared in big name stores in the UK. Because of their growing popularity, they had created a whole new market and supermarkets were forced to notice the sushi trend. They introduced lines of raw fish and seaweed-wrapped rice to nervous consumers anxious to try the phenomenon behind closed doors.
Even family friendly holiday resort Butlins, is now opening up a sushi restaurant in Bognor Regis. They have adapted traditional recipes to accommodate British tastes. The Managing Director Richard Bates says “We’ve responded to demand for more exotic and healthy choices... You might see Sushi as the contemporary version of fish and chips.” In an attempt to keep up to date with the times they are offering a ten-piece platter of seafood such as smoked salmon nigiri and tuna maki rolls.
