Pole Dancing is Not Child's Play
POLESTARS, the world's largest pole dancing school for fun and fitness, believes while pole dancing is a safe and fun way to keep fit, it is not an appropriate form of exercise for children.
While some pole dancing schools are happy to teach children as young as 11, POLESTARS classes are only open to women over 18. Pole dancing has opened up to the public as a valid form of exercise over the last few years, however there are still sexual connotations to this form of dance.
While competitors claim that pole dancing for children does not contain any of the elements of sexuality that are commonly associated with pole dancing, it is difficult to separate the elements of this type of dance in people's minds.
The companies who teach pole dancing to children believe that it is the acrobatic element of the pole that appeals to them, rather than any sexual notions. However, there are many forms of exercise available to children that allow them to be just as acrobatic, ranging from gymnastics, to classes in circus skills. These forms of exercise allow children to play and learn tricks, without the phallic symbol of the pole being used.
While POLESTARS classes are open to all women over the age of 18, the average age of participants is around the 25-35 age bracket. This is generally because younger women generally do not have enough confidence in their body or their sexuality to enroll in classes like these. If the issues surrounding pole dancing for fitness are so confronting to young women, how can children be expected to deal with them?
